Flapper Style of the 1920s - Halloween Idea

As Halloween is quickly approaching *gah, don't even have my costume decided!  Oh noes!* I thought that a series on possible costume looks/ideas would be fun.  Kelly with Costume Supercenter decided to shine a spotlight on the jazzy flappers fashions from the 20s:

From everything we know about the 1920s, Flappers had the most fun. They were deviant, brash, flirtatious, smoked cigarettes, drove cars, and defied all social norms of the time. They were known for heavy make-up, short skirts, and short hair.

The most popular hairstyle worn by flappers was the finger wave. This is super tricky to master, but still can be easily mimicked, and if you aren't a hairstylist, this can be a useful trick.

Start out with wet, slightly gelled hair. Comb and part your hair in the center, making sure there are no knots. Comb one side of your hair to the front and clip it with a long wave clip, making sure to place it carefully, so as not to crease he hair too much.

Comb the hair hanging from the clip back towards the nape of your neck. Clip it again, this time about an inch or two away from the previous clip, depending on how long your hair is and how tight you want your waves. For tighter waves, move the clips closer together.

Again, comb the hair hanging from the clip towards the front of your face. Clip it again, creating a wave effect in your hair. Repeat these steps until you have as much hair as you would like gathered in the clips, remembering to stagger the direction in which you comb the hair.

Finish it off with hairspray and then let your hair dry in the clips. Before you take your clips out, spray with hairspray again for extra hold. Take out the clips one by one, and it should have a wave shape going through your hair:

Now that you have your flapper look, you need to have your flapper persona. Flapper Slang was a bit ridiculous, and not much of it has carried over, unlike the slang from the 50s. Here are some examples of flapper slang in use.

His blue serge got a handcuff from a mouthpeice who took her for a ride on his stutter-tub. She up and left! I heard from the clothesline she has been barney-muggin him for a year. She met him at a petting party, he is completely father time.

Blue Serge- A Girlfriend
Handcuff- Engagement Ring
Mouthpeice- Lawyer
Stutter-tub- Motor Boat
Clothesline- Neighborhood Gossip
Barney-Muggin- Making Love
Petting Party- Social event devoted to hugging
Father Time- anyone over 30

Let’s blouse, that snugglepup better find me a dimbox. I’m not about to cut myself a piece of cake while he makes feathers with that tomato.

Let’s blouse- Let’s go
Snugglepup- Man who frequents petting parties
Dimbox- Taxi
Cut myself a piece of cake- Making yourself wait patiently
Feathers- Small talk
Tomato- Pretty girl with no brains

I think I’ll telephone my dapper when he is good and half cut to see if he will lend me his anchor for hush money. A girl needs some sugar for dog kennels.

Dapper- Father
Half Cut- Happily drunk
Anchor- Bank Roll
Hush Money- Allowance from father
Sugar- Money
Dog Kennels- Shoes

There you have it. Do the Charleston till dawn and then have some hooch under the sunrise like the fun-loving flappers of the 20s.

Would you rock the Flapper look for Halloween?
