Tropical Makeup Look FOTD

Today I started my first official day working at Ulta, which is a beauty lovers dream.  Surrounded by makeup, skincare, and hair products, chatting with customers about beauty items....all fun!  They also have a salon and spa, so there's facials to look forward to :D  Ahh, nice times ahead!

Anyway, can't work at a beauty store without getting all dolled up!  I think that will be my favorite part, planning my makeup looks each time that I have to work.  Today, I wanted to go with a tropical feel with orange, green, teal, purple, and yellow making the eyes pop.

Products used:

Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer

MAC paint pot in Groundwork all over the lids

MAC Firespot (orange) on the inner corners

L'oreal H.I.P. duo in Showy in the middle of the lid (the teal)

NYX Chick after the teal on outer edge (yellow)

L'oreal H.I.P duo in Riotous (the dark green) in crease and lower lid

Urban Decay 24/7 Liner in Ransom on waterline

Urban Decay 24/7 Liner in Zero on outer corners of upper lid

Korres Wild Rose Brightening Foundation in WRF8

Covergirl Lash Blast Mascara

Revlon Super Lustrous lip gloss in Shine City

Revlon Brow Enhancer

What do you think?  Would you rock the bright look?

Beauty Uses For Olive Oil

Olive oil is truly a great wonder of the world!  Not only is it amazing and healthy to cook with, but it has numerous benefits for a beauty regimen!

-For smooth soft skin, especially with the colder months upon us, rubbing olive oil onto the skin after a warm shower is a great way to seal in moisture.  While still in the steamy bathroom, simply pour some into your palm and spread onto those gorgeous limbs of yours, focusing on the feet/elbows/knees.

-Did you know that olive oil can be used as a makeup remover?  It can even remove mascara!  Massage olive oil into the face and over the eyelids and wipe away with a warm towel then follow with your normal cleanser.  Voila, supple skin!  You could also do the oil cleansing method that is detailed here: Want to Ditch Store Bought Cleansers? or here: The Oil Cleansing Method

-Apply a bit of olive oil to lips before bed or going out into the cold for a natural lip balm!

-The hair LOVES olive oil!  I do a pre-shampoo treatment of olive oil and coconut oil with a creamy conditioner for easy to detangle hair.  If you don't want to deep condition with that mixture before washing, add olive oil to your shampoo and it will minimize the drying that can occur with shampoos.  Oil rinsing can be done by washing the hair, rinsing it, then coating your hair with olive oil before rinsing with water and adding conditioner.  This makes the hair soft and supple to the touch!  For those who have straight hair, after washing and conditioning your tresses, coat your hair with a 1/2 cup of olive oil then cover with a hot towel until it cools and then rinse out.  You'll notice more shine and health!  Olive oil is also great for sealing the ends of the hair after adding moisturizers to it whenever is needed.  For an itchy dry scalp, massage a bit of olive oil onto it.

-For a pampering bath, add olive oil to the water and your skin will thank you for it!

There are many beauty products that come with olive oil in its ingredients, but of course you can just buy straight up olive oil from your local grocer and reap the many beauty benefits available from the wonderful creation of nature.  Do you use olive oil in your beauty regimen?  How so?  Leave your tips in the comment section!

Total Randomness: Impersonations, Cookies, and Leopards

This weekend, I wanted to share some of the random goodies that have either made me laugh, tasted scrumptious, or looked oh so cute.  Let's check them out:

1. I had to make a run to JCPenney for some plain clothes for a new job, but who said that the shopping had to end there?  Luckily (or unluckily I should say since my credit card is going to explode) there is a Sephora inside this particular JCPenney's, so I snatched up a Murad Clarifying Mask while there.  It is supposed to be used once or twice a week to clear the skin of acne and imperfections with its formulation of clay and sulfur.  The smell is the normal sulfur scent but isn't overpowering; it dries within 10 minutes and then you simply wipe off with a warm towel.  I've noticed a reduction in this large pimple that I had on my cheek after 2 uses, so can't complain!  I like it so far and will remain on the regimen (I'm so bad with maintaining a constant regimen, lol, are you?)  Costs $38

While in JCP, I also was struck by the flyness of a leopard print jacket that I saw on a mannequin.  I've been lusting for a fur jacket FOREVER and although I didn't particularly want leopard print, this one was the perfect length, extremely soft, warm, and a great price (like $80 when it was originally $120)

2. Went Mellow Yellow with the nails this weekend, used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear. On top, used a clear with chunks of shiny dots and it came out quite adorable!  More spring/summer than fall but I wanted a happy feel.

3. I had an intense urge to bake which led to me making not only one but TWO treks out into the cold for a grocery store run when at first I saw that we needed eggs and then got home only to want to throw the carton when I saw that we were out of flour, lol.  Vonnie + cold wind don't mix often, so ya'll know I had to be jonesing to get out there TWICE!  The recipe is incredibly simple and everyone loves them; they are especially great at Christmas with some colored sugar sprinkles on them in red and green.  Here's the simple recipe:

2 Sticks of butter

2 cups of flour

1 cup of sugar

1 large egg

That's it!  You just combine those in a bowl, starting by beating the egg in the mixing bowl and adding butter that has been sitting out for a while so that it's softened, then mix in the sugar (make it a heaping cup, doesn't need to be perfectly measured because a bit extra is good), then gradually add the flour because it's going to get stiff and you don't want to pile it all in at the same time or else it won't be evenly mixed in.  Bake on 350 degrees for roughly 12 minutes or until the edges get a bit brown.  Yum Yum!

They should be soft in the middle and a little crispy around the edges.  So good!  Put thicker dollops on the pan if you want them more soft and smaller dollops for crispy cookies.

4. Last but not least, this video was shown to me by my best friend and I have been practically crying laughing at how spot on it is!  This guy is super talented and NAILS the way of speaking and mannerisms of both Denzel Washington and Will Smith.  You've gotta watch this video; what do you think? Funny right? You close your eyes and honestly would think that Denzel and Will were on screen

Friend Friday - Self Promotion

It's Friend Friday again as hosted by Modly Chic and our topic this week is Self Promotion.  When does it become too much to try and get readers; when does it become aggravating spam?  Here's my take on the questions, how would you answer them?

1. How do you promote your blog?

I join different communities where I fit such as brown beauty bloggers, pass on my links to my twitter followers, post to facebook, and comment on other blogs so that people know that I exist.  I also give out my pretty personalized business cards at events that have my blog information on them, make it easy for readers to get in contact with me or to follow the blog through many methods, and I interact with other blogs by commenting/retweeting their posts/chatting with the blog owners.

2. In your experience what has been the most effective form of self promotion?

Leaving my links on other sites in my signature when I leave comments.  That is just communications/marketing 101, getting your name out there.  I don't just leave a "cool post" stupid comment with my link as spam, BUT I do leave a genuine comment and read every post that I comment on before leaving my signature as just that, a signing off piece.  It is PART of the comment, not the whole point of the comment.  I get thousands of clicks from my signature being left somewhere, people rarely click simply on the name of comment writers.  Especially for the popular blogs, there are anywhere from 20-100 comments on a post, your link will stand out if it is clickable and in the message.  Getting your name out there is part of the game and anyone with a communications/marketing degree/background would know that.  Really quite common sense too, I'd think.  People click on things that stand out to them.  I did an experiment by going for a week with still commenting but not putting my link.  Guess what?  New subscribers and people checking out the blog dropped by half because people don't click on comment makers names as much.  I know that I don't so why would I expect that they would?  I click on links that I see while reading comments that I like.  Keep in mind, your name is at the top of your comment, if you post a well thought out one then by the time I hit the bottom of your comment, I am intrigued and check out the link back that you posted.  Same reason that if you want comments on your blog that it's smart to post the comment button at the END of your posts.

3. Do you think there is a wrong way to promote yourself and your blog?

Yes, I don't believe in going to every post and leaving stupid, generic spam posts that are ONLY made to promote my blog or giveaway.  I'd never just say "nice" and then put my link and you can tell when someone is spamming in such a manner.  NOT cute!  Have something about THEIR post to say and then leave your signature/link at the end.  I also find it extremely intriguing that so many bloggers want comments yet aren't at all arsed enough to comment on other people's blogs; you give what you get often times!  And don't visit someone's blog ONE time spamming them and then expect for them to be a follower of your blog.  Show interest in their blog and be consistent, then perhaps they may do the same for you.

4. When it comes to others pushing their product what annoys you?

In your face zeal.  Show me what you have to show me and let me make my own decisions.  Leave me a comment on my blog, leave your link if you want, and I will check it out and DECIDE if I want to leave a comment or follow.  Don't give me directions to do so.

5. In Dressful's post on this topic earlier in the week she said, "It's impossible to respect someone who wants all the attention, but adds nothing worthwhile to the conversation." Do you agree?

I completely agree.  There are comments made by people who didn't even read the post, just spammed their link everywhere and it is not a good strategy.  I skip those links for sure!  However, when a good comment/conversation is going on, then I check out those with answers that struck my fancy and then generally add them to my blog reader.  Voila, new follower!  Otherwise, the motives for blatant self promotion are obvious and not appreciated.

In summary, I am all for self promotion but in a tasteful manner.  In my communications studies, we were taught to get our work out there and to make our voices heard; getting your name out is all a part of the game that I EXPECT and don't villify people for nor get pissy about.  As a writer, I write for people to READ my work and hopefully enjoy it and feel a connection to it, not just to speak to myself!  So of course I promote my pieces, same way that I showed off my first byline in a magazine and display print copies through promotion.  However, that doesn't mean that comment makers shouldn't contribute to the blog conversation where they are at nor should they be spammers who only care about getting their blogs seen without thinking about adding to the blogs that they are commenting on.  A copy/pasted message is a sure sign that you aren't fully invested in the piece that you are reading!  But the simple addition of a link back to your own blog does NOT make a comment automatically spam and people who think so are incredibly silly sounding to me.  It's not that big of a deal and is actually sound marketing/communications smarts to do so.  I get thousands  of clicks due to referrals from my link being on other blogs BUT I am not an inconsiderate douchebag who just spams my link on posts that I have never read.  It is human nature to click on something that is lit up and obvious (a signature) versus a random name over a comment, so I will CONTINUE to put my link out there but I will also continue to contribute to the conversation of whatever the blog host has so graciously taken their time to write about.  My link is the cherry on the top of the sundae that is my comment, NOT the whole sundae in and of itself!  On my blog, I pay it forward by allowing guest posts for people to promote themselves to my audience so there's really no need to spam when you could just legitimately be a part of the Socialite Dream.

The Essentials - How To Feel Girlishly Feminine

In the previous "Essentials" post, we talked about releasing the inner sexpot bombshell and what would be needed in order to do so.  This post is all about being girly, pretty, light, charming!  Can't be sex on legs ALL the time!

Honing into your bubbly, girly side will draw people in to you, make them want to be around you.  The saying that you draw more bees with honey than vinegar is an apt description for personalities; a vivacious woman will have more people wanting to keep her company than a bitter sourpuss! A good source to read for cultivating your inner girly girl is the blog: The Art of Being Feminine

Nia Long Celebrities arrive in red for the Heart Truth's Red Dress show in New York City.

So my pretty babies, here's the list of essential things that any charmingly pretty girl simply MUST have at her disposal:

1. Fresh Faced Makeup: Softly blushing cheeks, full pink lips, and super flirty lashes are key for a fresh, glowing face.  Highlighter over the tops of cheeks and on the inner corners of the eyes will make your face seem wide awake and ethereal!

2. A happy smile!  That is certainly key for a bubbly air.  Teeth whiteners aren't bad to have around, that's for sure.

3.  Flouncy/full skirts and dresses!  Tutus done in a fashionable way, pretty patterns, bright colors, and of course PINK go far for evoking girly beauty.

4. A coy, flirty manner to you!  Keep people on their toes with your wit, bat those lashes, send a wink and a smile their way.  Will have the world eating out the palm of your pretty little hands.

5. Speaking of hands, manicures and pedicures are a must!  Fun colored nails on soft hands and feet look great as someone holds your hand tight.

6. Soft, touchable hair!  Healthy hair is definitely a coveted, desirable asset to have; straight, wavy, kinky, or curly, just as long as it is healthy and well taken care of!

I deem those the girly girl must haves to be cute butterflies in the social stratosphere.  What do you think is essential in order to be totally feminine?

You've Got Me Twisted Over You

Ya'll remember that Keith Sweat joint? Man, that was my FAVORITE. *goes down memory lane*  Anyway, the snazzy, sexy twisted front dress trend is all the rage and totally a favorite of mine!  Ruching detail, twisted coolness, all of those are flattering on most shapes and add in bit of a smaller waist while hiding some *ahem* issues.

Miss Ciara rocked the heck out of her Jasmine De Milo red twisted front dress

Haute, right?  And those shoes! Giving me life right now!  The makeup is quite on point too and I must say that the hair is LOVELY.  All around win, Ciara, you did your thing.

Here are some twisted, ruched, drape front dresses that I find to be quite appealing, what say you?

This dress is by James Perse and available for $225. Sexy yet still work appropriate!

This Riller and Fount number is available for $165

Love this khaki green dress by Asos.  It's also quite affordable at only $45

I've asked for this one on my Christmas list, quite wearable!  Another Asos beauty and it retails for $49 and comes in petite.

Those are some of my favorites.  I love them because they hide the rolls, pudge, and any other imperfections while still staying stylish and on trend!  Would you wear any of them?

Hump Day Hotties - EyeCandy Wednesdays (Bite-Sized)

Laaadies, it's that time again! Hump Day Hotties!  This week we are going to give the handsome, height challenged hotties some props, lol.  There are some gorgeous guys who just so happen to be a bit on the short size; they deserve a shout out too ;)  5'8 and under men, we still find you humpable!

1. Tom Cruise - he has been a heartthrob, crazy couch jumping scientologist, blockbuster making A-lister, hilarious nut....pretty much everything and still going strong since the 80s. Get it handsome!

Prince - Really, what is there to say about Prince?  He dresses more girly than even I do and manages to make it work.  Team blouses, baby!  Women still swoon at that man's little feet

Al Pacino - what an illustrious career he's had! I woulda said hello to his little friend at some points ;)

Omarion - I met dude when I worked at Jet Magazine and was definitely surprised that we were practically eye level and I only had on short wedges (I'm 5'1).  Oh well, he's still majorly cute and I'll always have fond memories of B2K

Ryan Seacrest - hardest working man in Hollywood right here.  Love his smile (it snagged him a mouthwash commercial!) and friendly vibes.

Larenz Tate - He's a special request from twitter, slide him onto the list :)  He's a fellow Chicago Native so I have love for him
